High-tech gadget remembers what you can’t

Between work and family I’m a very busy person. One of my most important functions as a family member is to do the grocery shopping and I admit, I am not perfect. I often forget what I need to pick up or lose my grocery list. Recently, I found a new product that would save me a lot of headaches, it’s called the SmartShopper.

This innovative invention enables the user to simplify everyday tasks. Imagine being able to say an item that you need to pick up from the store or an errand you need to run, and have a device that remembers it for you. The SmartShopper makes this possible using Nuance’s state of the art voice recognition technology. A computer chip is present which permits your spoken words to be stored. This high-tech gadget comes pre-programmed with a list of over 2,000 general grocery items and errands. The contraption displays the entries on the LCD screen and allows you to print the list using thermal paper.

This modern device versus old-fashioned conventional methods certainly makes me contemplate my current list making options. So again, SmartShopper can retain what you tell it, display what you say, print it all out, and save our valuable time.

Social Networks in the News: Facebook Grows & Obama Gets Tweeted

There are dozens of Social Networks available to people all over the world, and two of the most popular are making big news … again. Facebook is in the spotlight for its impressive growth, and Twitter for a message that only had a short lifespan.

Facebook has more registered users than some countries have people. Their latest statistics show that the website is catching up with the populace of the United States. According to the most recent Census, the U.S. currently has 305,529,237 residents. The “population” of Facebook isn’t far behind – they now have just over 300 million users.

Last July Facebook reported 250 million users, so this is a very impressive jump in numbers over a short period of time. The company is constantly looking for creative ways to attract even more people. They recently launched Facebook Lite, a toned down version of Facebook that they claim is a “faster, simpler way to keep in touch with your friends”. Facebook also has several projects in the works, including a voice chat application, to delight social networkers.

It’s working. Although the site has been wildly popular, it has not been profitable. That changed during their last quarter; for the first time ever, Facebook made a profit. This is causing people to view the future of the company in a different light. Until recently there has been a great deal of speculation that Facebook would be sold to a large competitor, but now people are thinking the social networking site is in it for the long run.

Twitter gets talked about a lot, but a few recent Tweets have really caught the attention of the nation. These Tweets came from employees of ABC News who overheard a comment made by President Barack Obama while his guard was down.

President Obama was talking with CNBC employees before an interview, and several ABC staff members who share the workspace were nearby. The subject of Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards came up, and Obama said that his actions were inappropriate. When someone asked why Kanye would do that, Obama replied “He’s a jacka**”.

Obama’s statement was met with laughter, and he asked that it be kept within the room. His request was denied, however, when more than one ABC employee Tweeted about what the President said. ABC officials had the messages removed, but by then they had been seen by a large number of people and were already being Re-Tweeted by those who approved and disapproved of the President’s comment.

This incident reopens a recent discussion about what people who work at nationally recognized companies can and cannot post on their social profiles. Representatives of ABC felt it was wrong for their employees to post a comment Obama made privately, and this could lead to a new set of rules that people must follow when using social networks. In the meantime Obama’s remarks will fall under intense scrutiny all across the globe.

Several Millions of Bank Cards Have Been Hacked

The largest card swindle in the world done by unknown hackers.

TJX hackers have lost their doubtful record for data break-in involving card data. Then around 45 million cards were involved.

The American bank-credit card payment system company called Heartland has had unwanted visitors in their systems. Heartland is the largest US company within payment systems.

Malicious software has been planted in their systems to sniff card data. Visa and Mastercard reported suspicious activities in their systems and a research was performed and revealed a global effect of this break in.

It is not certain for how long the hackers have been in their systems and collected data.

There is not a certainty to what data the sniffer software has been looking for, but Heartland ensure that no personal information like social security codes, nor addresses or phone numbers have been taken out of their systems. But most likely the hackers have been looking for the track-2 data, which is the information from the magnetic stripe on the cards.

Heartland treats over 100 million transactions every month and this seems therefore to be the largest scam ever done on card thefts.

This means that more that 45 million cards are exposed to this theft.

CardCops reports that there are rumors in the underground that a huge break in has been performed in a company like Heartland.

In addition there has been a 20% increase in activities the hackers utilize to check whether the cards are working or not. They perform small transactions to charity organizations. December 23rd 2008 RBS Worldpay reported on behalf of The Royal Scotland Group that they have also had a break in to their systems. Around 1.5 million cards were leaked this time.

To attack companies like this is more serious than doing a break in to a store as these companies are the nerve centers in any payment transaction through out the world.

Drastic measures have to be taken in order to capture these hackers and at the same time make systems more bullet proof in the future.
