Your computer is old and it is getting slow. It takes what seems like an age to start up and when it does it crashes all the time. So you’ve decided to invest in a new PC but before you rush out and spend your hard earned cash you need to think about what exactly needs replacing and what can you keep. You need to think about both Software and Hardware. In this article we will cover hardware considerations.
Quite a bit of your old computer’s hardware may be candidates for keeping. If you’re present computer is older than 6 years then it is safe to say that there won’t be any useful components but most people will find that they will make big savings by recycling parts from their old PC.
Monitors
A monitor makes up a few hundred pounds of the PC’s purchase price, so straight away you can make big savings if you keep your older computer’s monitor as long as it is in a good condition or specially if you recently bought a new LCD monitor.
If you really want to buy a new monitor, then that is fine as you can use the old one as a second monitor and have more screen real estate.
Hard Drives
You should get a new hard drive as they are cheap and also it can be dangerous to rely on an old hard drive that has been working hard.
Memory
You shouldn’t really bother with moving memory from your old computer to your new one because they probably won’t be compatible as the old memory will be lower capacity and slower speed.
Printers
The easiest decision you can make and a no-brainer. As long as your printer is in good working order there is no point in purchasing a new one just for the sake of it.
Modems
No need to bother with the internal modem as your new PC will come with it but cable and DSL or external dial-up modems can be moved to your new computer.
