Firstly there are some objections to the fact that the term augmented reality is used to mean the fun that can be had when you have a web cam and use some computer software that makes 3D models appear over a square marker. I think that terms are normally best to accept what the public thinks, that way there is always less confusion. So first lets just say that we will call it augmented reality.
Youtube has exploded with various videos and games that people have made with the new technology. If you have not seen it yet then check out “ecomagination smartgrid” for a great example.
This technology not only is available to everyone with a browser and a webcam, but it can be useful and fun. Two important things for any technology.
The best things about it are:
Anyone can use it (Flash has a 98% useage) New ways of interacting with the computer bring more users Can be a good addition to printed marketing campaigns
When we get past the ‘new’ phase of the augmented reality tech, then hopefully we will see some really good uses come out from developers and marketers. There are many practical uses that are starting to come forward such as the postage size checker. There are many more ideas out there as well, and also a psp game with 3D animated creatures, that are already making use of it.
I have even posted a quick test of augmented reality if you want an idea of how it works. Its nothing fancy just a quick render that I am interacting with.
