Whats the difference between an Ipod 8g 3rd Generation and a MP3 player?

I want an Apple iPod nano 8 GB Pink (3rd Generation) OLD MODEL for christmas and my mom wants to get me a Mp3 player.I really DONt want one but i cant tell her the difference because i dont know it.. Thanks if you know fer realsies thank YOU!
