Applications of Mass Spectrometry

Mass spectrometry analysis measures charged particles for mass-to-charge ratio, which is, measuring masses and the relative concentration of atoms and molecules in them. Mass spectrometers have commonly found applications in industry as well as academia.

Some of the most popular applications of mass spectrometry systems are:
1. Biochemistry:
Mass Spectrometry plays a vital role in molecular weight measurements. The system offers accurate results in confirmation of sample; helps determine the purity of the sample, monitor enzyme reactions, protein digestion, chemical modification and amino acid sequencing and oligonucleotide sequencing.

2. Dating and tracking isotopes: Mass Spectrometry is adopted to derive at the isotopic composition of elements within any given sample. The sensitive nature of the instruments helps detect the disparity in mass among isotopes which is extremely small. These isotope markers help identify the age of certain materials in processes such as carbon dating; and labeling with stable isotopes assist in protein quantifications.

3. Exploring the Space: Mass spectrometry systems have been interestingly employed in popular space programs such as the Viking Program to Mars, and the Cassini-Huyegens mission through the atmosphere of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. The mass spectrometers were used to study the atmospheric samples through the atmosphere during descent and also samples of the surface of the planet and the moon.

4. Pesticide Detection: Today, pesticides can easily find its way even in natural foods and supplements. The only viable and reliable method to test food and food products for multiple pesticides is with the help of mass spectrometry. This method which determines multiple compounds at the same time was developed at the U.S FDA by a Douglas Hayward and Jon Wong.

5. Atom Probe: This methodology is a combination of the popular time-of-light (TOF) Mass Spectrometry System and field ion microscopy for the purpose of mapping each individual atom.

In addition to these, mass spectrometry systems such as quadrupole mass spectrometry are applied in biotechnology for the analysis of proteins, peptides, and oligonucleotides. Pharmaceutical companies benefit from mass spectrometers such as triple TOF mass spectrometry systems for drug discovery, pharmacokinetics, combinatorial chemistry, and drug metabolism. Mass spectrometry also has its applications in clinical set ups for neonatal screening, drug testing and hemoglobin analysis. The system is employed for environmental studies such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon hazard studies, water quality testing, food contamination and Polychlorinated Biphenyl. Mass spectrometers are also used for oil composition testing.

Accord Brake Pads – Enjoy Speed With Responsibility

We all take great delight in the advance of technology. When a new music related technology is launched we queue up to buy the product because we can’t wait to enjoy the latest improvements made by the audio industry. Similarly for product after product as soon as we come to know of a new development we look for an opportunity to try the new product out. True there are persons who prefer being creatures of habit but even they do at times want to try out new products. That is the reason why most old car models are no longer available and new ones keep arriving each year.

Though we are truly delighted with the advancement in the technology it is not all just about having fun. Often with a new technology comes a new responsibility. Take for instance the modern automobile. It offers us a world of conveniences but at the same time most people will know of someone who got hurt in an automobile accident or worse. Of course those who bring you the new technologies themselves take care to make sure that the chances of mishaps are minimized but we the end users still need to take due care.

And we can take care by making sure that the critical components of our car specially those directly related to safety such as the brakes are in great condition. And when possible we should even look to improve them. For example if you own a popular car such as a Honda Accord then when it is time to change the brake pads it will make a lot of sense to check out the latest Accord brake pads rather than just have a replacement fitted. Brake pads tend to wear out just as car tires do and they need to be replaced at the time. The latest Accord brake pads may be better than the original and can possibly stop your car better. This is quite likely if your car is a few years old because car components tend to improve year on year and the latest ones are usually the best ones.

My new Chinese translation gadget translates to gibberish when usin MSWord ’07!!?

I just bought a Penpower Super ScanEye translater, which scans Chinese characters for direct translation on the device or for storage on the computer. All works fine when I translate directly, and also when I input it onth the computer using the provided program. But, as soon as I try to copy anything into MSWord, it turns to gibberish. I know it must be a system setting (somehow) although I don’t know where to start looking.
I use my computer constantly to type Chinese (using MSWord) without a hitch. I also have all the neccesary Chinese IME’s installed. Furthermore I’ve changed the non-unicode reading language to Chinese. Still getting gibberish.
I do have another solution – going onto a website to correct corrupt emails works to get the gibberish into readable characters, but it takes a while, and I’m sure I should be able to get it right on my computer.
If anyone has any suggestions, let me hear from you, please!
