Is Rural Internet Service Available?
Yes, there is Rural Internet Service available in rural and remote areas; it just may not be as fast as internet services in other parts of the country and world.
There are also some internet applications that are evolving such as EDVO, which is Evolution Data Optimized or Evolution Data Only. This is internet service through a mobile broadband router. It is used in many places but it also can be used in remote or rural areas unless there is no broadband service available. Then the router will attempt to connect to another application which, if it is able to connect, will be as slow as or slower than dial up. And this service may not be available either. There are efforts to improve this service through LTE, which is Long Term Evolution and through 3G or 4G which are basically advanced generation systems.
Another evolving process for remote or Rural Internet Service is called WiMax. WiMax is the acronym for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. It is based on broadband technology to provide the coverage and quality of a cell phone network. It is in existence but it is not readily available to the general public in all locations. It may be the way to provide a high speed Rural Internet Service to areas where it is not economically viable for other internet options.
Another option for rural or remote areas is the satellite internet service. This basically is a connection to satellite miles up in the sky. This connection will send data up those miles, then back down and then back up again. It often has issues of latency which is really a delay of sending and receiving data. This would be especially true at peak hours such as when people get home from work and start up their computers. This type of service has some up front costs associated with it for equipment and set up and installation. It is also known to limit how much broadband you can use for data download. This may be more limited during peak hours.
Another option for rural or remote internet users is still the dial up connection which is widely available in rural or remote areas. This allows farmers or ranchers to access the internet. Basically, a dial up connection uses the telephone line to connect to the Internet. The computer uses the computer modem to connect the home phone line to it. A call is made to the ISP which accesses the internet. This was the first method that most homeowners in the United States accessed the internet. This way is cheaper to use but it is slow as it has to wait for telephone connections and if too many people are trying to access the internet it is really slow.
Some small cities and towns or community organizations in rural areas are installing Wi-Fi networks that the public can use. Rural or remote internet access is still an opportunity to be developed in an economically feasible manner.
