Eight Cool Things About Solar That Just Might Change the World

Rapid changes in the solar power sector are fueling a green energy revolution. With so much emphasis on solving the global warming puzzle, technology in solar is advancing very quickly and may be the answer we’ve been looking for. Let’s take a look at how this industry is changing so quickly.

1. Solar Panel Prices Are Coming Down – And Fast

The biggest detractor for solar in the past has been simple: it was just too expensive to be practical. Coal generated power was as much as 90% cheaper than solar power. But with the massive investment in production capacity, coupled with the global economic slowdown, prices on solar panels have come down anywhere from 10%-30% in the last 6 months. This means that many projects that were borderline before are now feasible. And the trend appears to be gaining steam. Prices on Sharp solar panels, for instance, have been lowered 3 times since May, bringing their cost into the $4/watt range. Just last year they were closer to $5/watt.

2. Solar Film Will Drive Prices Even Lower

Companies such as FirstSolar, Nanosolar, and Sharp are quickly bringing solar film, also called thin-film solar, to market. We’ve been promised this amazing technology for years and it seems its finally here. Thin film is manufactured in a way that is similar to printing, and the product often comes in a roll. This is a much more efficient way of producing cells than the traditional solar panel, which was made in a process similar to microchips. We are seeing initial pricing on this new technology in the $1 to $2/watt range.

3. Efficiency is Getting Better

Solar efficiency is the measure of power produced versus the sun’s energy that hits the panel. In the past any efficiency over 15% was seen as good, and approaching 20% was great. Now such panels as SunPower’s are regularly achieving 22%. That means more bang for buck and more energy produced for every square inch of panel installed.

4. Thin Film Efficiency is Better Too

Solar film is levelling the field on efficiency. Thin film traditionally had efficiencies in the 10% area, roughly half the efficiency of crystalline panels. While that measured quantity has trended up slightly, industry professionals are finding that actual production is higher. This is because the film produces better in diffuse light and partially shaded conditions than panels. In one project in Israel, installers recently found that the thin film solar only required 25% more surface area compared to crystalline panels to produce the same energy. This means that actual efficiency is probably closer to 15% for film.

5. Utility Scale Solar is Blossoming

Utility scale solar is PV power for the masses, brought to you through your traditional power lines. Usually the power plants are located in desert areas with ample sunshine. They often use a technology called concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) that uses mirrors, tracking devices, and advanced solar panel technology to squeeze (almost) every drop of energy from sunlight. Due to new federal rules on depreciation, generous tax credits, and technological advances, utilities and investors can install these systems profitably. In the next 5-10 years we will probably see the record for largest CPV installation broken several times over. Projects in Colorado, California, and Arizona are already under way and will vie for the nation’s largest when complete.

6. Power Is Getting More Expensive

While this isn’t necessarily good news, it’s certainly overdue. Until we wrap the true environmental cost of producing carbon into the cost of electricity, our environmental picture will not improve. Whether we do that through cap and trade, a carbon tax, or another way, it means that power is going to cost more in the short term. This increased cost will encourage energy efficiency and drive improvement in the production, transportation, and storage of electricity. It will also make solar power look more attractive.

7. Research Will Only Fuel the Revolution

Speaking of innovation, research and development will change the industry in ways we’re not even aware of yet. Our wonderful university research programs are driving tremendous changes in the industry. Energy has become a focus of federal and industry dollars, much the way telecommunications and information technology was in the last decade. College programs now emphasize energy efficiency in all aspects of design and engineering, and integrating solar in buildings, vehicles, and even clothing have become the norm. It seems like every week we hear about a breakthrough in solar panels, thin film solar, and battery technology in our university research programs

8. Massive Investment Will Incubate the Next Energy Stars

One sure sign of change to come is when Silicon Valley venture capital gets involved. These funds are only interested in investing in sectors that are rapidly growing and can make gobs of money in a short time. So when you hear they are investing billions of dollars in photovoltaic technology, and a new deal seems to be coming every week, you can bet there are big things on the horizon. These prognosticators may not be right all the time, but you can bet they don’t throw their money away at weak prospects. The same guys who made huge bets on Google, Yahoo, and Netscape are now putting their chips on the energy sector, and specifically solar power.

Advantages of Custom Software Development for Different Businesses

Every software company strives to maintain a close relationship with its customers by offering customized solutions to their various requirements. Hence, the role of custom software development has grown in prominence in recent times. During a period when business organizations are making all kinds of efforts to become the industry leaders, a stereotypical product with the same age-old functionalities may curtail their advancing chances.

For securing exclusivity in business goals, custom-made or user-friendly software is the most excellent choice at the moment. The major goal of custom software development is to generate an as precise end-product as demanded by the customer. A tailor-made product must be developed after understanding the requisites and preferences of the client.

Customized packages are devised by making use of the most recent technology. They are exclusively developed to satisfy the customer’s business needs. Any difficulty or disliking of the customer that grows out of the building process can be rectified during the formulation of the software with his/her permission and this is the most important advantage of such package development.

As soon as the system is built and delivered to the client, there may be no requirement to make changes to it since it is already developed to perfection. In case of a readymade package, a business concern may need to carry out a stringent procedure of reconstituting their goals (usually called configuration) so as to comply with the application (which usually turns out to be very expensive since you are dependent on the product provider for development).

Businesses may need to get in touch with the manufacturer of the product for alterations in the presently existing system to match the necessities. This consumes plenty of precious time, energy and financial resources. The tailor-made product is built eyeing specific requirements of the end users and therefore, the complete custom application development costs need to be paid by one client which does not take place in case of the readymade software.

After the development stage, custom-made system can be implemented right away because the customer hardly requires any modification in the delivered product. The time invested at the time of building custom system may be greater. However, this must not be an impediment in selecting a customized package for an organization’s particular function. However, the question arises why the software development life cycle goes up during the building phases.

This is because of the fact that the procurement of the ideal tailor-made product demands strict inspection to ensure proper comprehension, analysis and precise execution of thoughts into the final product. In addition, readymade package may result in lower levels of expenses than custom software development; but, the high expenditure in the latter case takes place only due to profound research and mounting customer demands since the end product needs to be an output sought by the client.

A committed custom application development company always communicates with the client through teleconferencing, telephone, electronic mail or chat, regardless of being onshore or offshore. This is the most crucial activity since the requirements can be transmitted and understood regularly and no possibility for ambiguities is brought forth. Customized software demands frequent communication before as well as after the development stage.

New Textiles And Cloths at Prato Textile Museum

Textiles and cloth have long been a part of humans life and contributed to make it always more advanced, being first of all clothes for humans, then elements of personal embellishment and signs of a particular social status, until they became an element to furnish the house and they are used to create complement furniture and many other thing that we daily use.

The process which made textiles become used and essential objects and their history doesn’t seem to be finished even now in the XXI century. Textiles and cloths were indeed protagonist of Futurotextiles. Surprising textiles, design & Art, exhibition that took place in Prato from 30 September to 13 November 2011. Prato, Italian capital of textile was chosen as the last stop of the itinerant exhibition dedicated to textiles, which was first shown to the public of Istanbul, Bangkok, Shangai, Barcelona and Cordoba. The idea of making the exhibition also in Prato Textile Museum was born from the cooperation between Andrea Cavicchi, President of Textile Museum of Prato Foundation, Giorgio Silli, vice-president of the European Textile Cities Association- ACTE Italy, Martine Aubry, Mayor of Lille and President of Lille Metropole Communaute Urbaine and Ivan Renar, President of Lille3000.

“The exhibition wants to be the concrete evidence of the evolving process that is now involving the field which, projected to the future, is revolutionizing the traditional concept of textile products employment” said Andrea Cavicchi , and continues: “..for this reason we are really proud of hosting in our Textile Museum such an extensive European exhibition, able to give visitors a wide panoramic on the new potentialities applied to textile and fibers”. The exhibitions as we said before, was in the main European textile cities of Europe and of the world, and was organized by Lille3000, body created for the promotion of the French capital of textiles, Lille, and by Caroline David; it arrived also in Prato thanks to the collaboration of ACTE- European Textile Cities Association- with local bodies like the Prato Textile Museum Foundation of Toscana region, the foundation Cassa di Risparmio di Prato, Pratese Industrial service union, Banca Popolare di Vicenza, Patrizia Pepe and Asm.

At the exhibition have been shown to the public highly interactive textiles, able to read data for health controls, as for example temperature ad beat; textiles compounds ideal for botanic use, able to absorb high quantities of water and to release them gradually, feeding plants and gardens; sport textiles able to protect from injuries and unexpected traumas; T-shirts able to feed the skin and release cosmetic substances; and then also textiles and cloth that absorbs polluting substances from the ambient or meshes made of steel and photo luminescent textiles able to light and guide people when walking in dark rooms.

This and much more was exposed at the Futurotextiles. Surprising textiles, design & Art which showed clearly how the future of textile products is all about the cooperation with technology, science, art, in order to create elements for architecture, biotechnology, medicine, transports, sport, electronic and also aerospace use.
