Is there a good way to add a sidebar to a homepage that shows recent posts from other sites?

I’m looking to add a side-bar to a homepage that will show the most recent updates from blogs that exist on our network. Can do this manually, but it’s kind of a pain in the a$s. Wondering if anyone knows a good gadget that will make life easier.
