This article is a review of the widely acclaimed movie “taxi Driver.” If you have never seen this movie, or even if you’ve seen it a long ago, it warrants a rental from your local video shop. Even by today’s standards, it is a bold study of human drama and insanity.
The movie starts out with a taxi driver who is unsatisfied with his life. He works the night shift driving a New York taxi cab, and is completely fed up with the amount of filth and depravity he sees on a regular basis. In the early scenes of the movie, we get to meet some of the characters he picks up in his cab that gives him his unique opinion of humanity.
He has a chance at normalcy when he falls for a girl that is working for a political campaign for a local politician. He even goes on a date with her, and for a brief period, it looks as though he may even have a normal relationship, which may save him from is disgusted view of humanity. Unfortunately, on his date with her, he brings her to an adult movie theater, ruining his chances of anything resembling a normal adult relationship.
He meets up with a gun dealer, and buys several guns with the intention of assassinating a political candidate. He practices endlessly in front of the mirror, pulling a concealed weapon on an imaginary person who sleights him, in what is likely one of the most well known scenes in movie history.
He shaves his head, dresses like a punk rocker and does not follow through with his plan to assassinate the political candidate. In a bizarre twist of events, he is involved in a shoot out with a pimp, and inadvertently saves a girl from a continued life of prostitution on the streets. He receives a heart felt thank you letter from her parents after she safely returns home to the Midwest.
Taxi driver is a haunting study in one man’s view of reality, and how he chooses to deal with it. We get to go with him as he journeys through the heart of darkness, and actually root for him to come out on the other side. Taxi Driver is therefore one of the movies that you absolutely must watch.
