Following my computer losing the IP address, I am trying to secure my SSID and I lose connection.?

I have reset my router numerous times, and the problem I am finding is that I cannot rename my router to make it secure. Whenever I try to do this, the connection gets lost, but I can see the wireless connection as an option.
