Gadgets: Old Versus New

Household gadgets are all the rage these days, from funky stocking fillers, such as odd shaped corkscrews and quirky tin openers, to more practical gadgets like water filters and multi tools. Whether you need your orange peeled or your feet massaged there seems to be a gadget ready and waiting to help you out. In days gone by household gadgets were somewhat of a costly treat for most people, things of luxury to be treasured and passed down through the generations. Nowadays the emphasis on many products is, first and foremost, fun.

The high demand for new and improved household gadgets has seen prices lowered and a huge array of new items filling up shop shelves across the country, but it could be said that making way for new and improved toys has left many of our old gadgets and gizmos obsolete. As the years have gone by the quality and durability of many of our favourite household products has been pushed aside to make way for cheaper and more accessible goods. Items such as toasters, phones and music systems have all gone though some major redesigns over the past few decades and not all of them have made these gadgets more durable.

Complex mechanics are one of the reasons for the low durability our modern household gadgets seem to have. More buttons, lights and fiddly bits unfortunately often means it’s more likely that something will go wrong with your appliance. Similarly, cheaper materials and bad workmanship all contribute to our short-lived sidekick’s downfall.

Some of us rely heavily on our household gadgets for all sorts of different reasons, so flimsy and easily damaged goods can be frustrating and downright annoying. There is some hope however as companies are constantly working to improve dodgy models and are utilising exciting new research and materials to make our household gadgets much more durable. New materials have helped make it possible to build sturdier gadgets. Silicon, PVC and vinyl are all used to great success in the gadgetry world and are helping households make use of their trusty gadgets for much longer than ever before.

Modern gadgets can be fun, great to look at and cheap, but they don’t always stand up to the test of time like their old counterparts. So, if you’re buying expensive gadgets, or have an item you simply can’t live without, you might want to consider getting them covered by contents insurance so hopefully you won’t be without your favourite gadget for long.
