“Sin City,” based on the best selling graphic novel by Frank Miller was a groundbreaking release when it first came out in 2005. Successfully bringing comic book action to the big screen, this instantly became a hit, and was seen by millions of happy movie goers. With several stories interwoven within the movie, sometimes overlapping, this movie is a must see if you are at all interested in the graphic novel genre.
The principal tale centers about a character who is an ex cop, and has been wrongfully charged with a crime. While in imprisonment, he has to undertake a heart procedure, so he is strong enough to be executed. He gets out of lockup only to find an old girlfriend of his is in jeopardy, and he must go at overwhelming lengths to shelter her. The cop is played cleverly by Bruce Willis, who provides a amazing performance.
Another story is of a huge wild character who finds his beloved girl, Goldie, has been killed. He discovers the body, and the police force show up only a few minutes later, and assume he is the killer. A massive crusade ensues, with this large brutish, but loveable character throwing around law enforcement cars as if they were toys. It is understandable that only a comic book based story could have such believable action.
Another fascinating tale is that of a murderer, who kills a police force officer by mishap. He didn’t kill him by mistake, but only found out after the fact that he is a police officer. Since the police officer is fraudulent, he has to dispose of the body. This proves to be much more hard than predictable, as even when the apparently lifeless police officer is decapitated, he can still chat. Although we aren’t sure if he is actually talking, or if it’s a hallucination of the killer’s creativity. Nevertheless, it has a extreme impression on the killer as he tries desperately to obliterate the body.
Numerous other smaller stories are interwoven into the story. The basic surroundings is Basin City, which is utterly dishonest and filled with criminals, curved policemen and gangsters who wouldn’t deliberate twice about killing you for your lunch money.
All in all, Sin City, is a visual indulgence, and the fighting sequences are awfully realistic, making it a commendable addition to your DVD library. It has some great lines, which make owning it all the more useful, in case you find yourself needing to watch snippets of it here and there in order to boost your party spirit. We here give “Sin City” two thumbs up.
