when it comes to these new electronic gadgets I’m lost…Help!?

I’m looking for a cool Ipod or MP3 player for my son, there so many. Ranging from so many prices how can i make sure i get the right one (he’s only 9) if i get one, once i get how do i get the music for it. Any and all knowledge of these electronics would be greatly appreciated
